Grande Prairie, along the Gateway to the Alaska Highway, is a
thoroughly modern city of over 31,000 people, with shopping and
cultural amenities equal to those of much larger centres. Recreation
facilities within the City provide hiking, bird watching, paddle
boating, swimming, golfing, etc. It is also a short drive from some of
the most picturesque scenery in the country along with superb fishing
and hunting areas. It is approximately 450 kilometres northwest of
Edmonton and 160 kilometres east of the Rocky Mountains.
The County of Grande Prairie covers an area of 5,455 kilometres square
of which 40% is prime farmland. The area belongs to the Great Plains
Region of North America. The remainder is marginal farmland; with
forest cover around the perimeter; with extensive forest to the north,
south, and west, of the County. These forests belong to the Mixed Wood
and Lower Foothills section of the Boreal Forest Region. A small
mountain (Saskatoon Mountain) rises to a height of 3,100 feet (945
metres) above sea level, in the centre of the County.
